Tell us a story in one drawing

Discover Aaron Slater, Illustrator. His art makes a difference. His art leads the way. And helps him discover what he wants to say!

To celebrate Aaron Slater, Illustrator, we're giving young artists aged 0-12 the chance to win some fantastic goodies. We're challenging them to tell us a story in one picture. Whether that's a drawing, painted picture, or funny doodle – it's completely up to them. Send us a scan or photo of their picture using our form below before Wednesday 5th January. And don't forget a title for their story, too!

We'll whittle down a shortlist of 30 entries, and the winner and runners-up will be chosen by illustrator David Roberts.

The winner will receive:

  • A copy of Aaron Slater, Illustrator by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts
  • A set of Derwent Academy Art Pencils
  • A Questioneers book bundle (containing a copy of Ada Twist, Scientist; Iggy Peck, Architect; Rosie Revere, Engineer; and Sofia Valdez, Future Prez)
  • A signed Aaron Slater, Illustrator print by David Roberts
  • A £50/€60 National Book Tokens gift card, featuring Ada Twist

3 runners-up will receive a Questioneers book bundle and a £10/€15 National Book Tokens gift card.

The winners will be announced in January, so have fun letting your art lead the way over the Christmas break.

This competition has now ended. The winner and runners-up are announced below.

WINNER

The Kraken Who Likes to Steal Treasure
"The Kraken Who Likes to Steal Treasure"

Congratulations to 11-year-old Antoni!

"A perfectly composed image with clear storytelling yet leaving just enough to the viewer's imagination. Like a snapshot of a dramatic moment! The colour helped create atmosphere and drama. And a wonderfully monstrous Kraken. It's remarkable how expressive the picture is even though the characters don’t have faces! Brilliant!" - David Roberts

RUNNERS-UP

Crooked Pants Villain: Revenge of the Socks
"Crooked Pants Villain: Revenge of the Socks" by Chieyiem, age 9

Difference
"Difference" by Zelda, age 10

"Brilliantly odd and thought provoking picture. Its story is not at first obvious, and let's the viewer create a narrative of their own. A strange and intriguing landscape beautifully drawn, with intriguing characters. Captivating!" - David Roberts

How to Look After Your Croc Family
"How to Look After Your Croc Family" by Emily, age 8

"A wonderfully mischievous crocodile with a fantastic expression grinning with her saw-like teeth and wicked glint in her eye. Drawn in dramatic scale with visual jokes like the size of the tooth brush. Fabulous!" - David Roberts

Thank you to everyone who sent in their stories!
