Why do National Book Tokens Gift Cards Expire?

We are sorry for any inconvenience that card expiry may cause, we’ve taken steps to reduce this and all new cards only expire after 8 years of inactivity. Card expiry is designed to ensure that empty, lost or discarded gift cards (often with only a few pence on them) do not remain 'live' on our system for years, as this would slow it up.

For some cards sold before October 2015 the National Book Tokens Terms and Conditions state: "If the card is not used for a period of 24 consecutive months, the card will automatically expire and any remaining value will be deducted ("Use" for the purposes of this term includes balance enquiries)".
