New Book: The Mounth Passes by Graham J. Marr
Deeside is separated from the areas to the south by the long range of hills known as the Mounth, and the only low lying routes were therefore near the coast. Historically, before the development of modern road transport, walking routes would have been the shortest and most viable means of communication for the majority of people, even if it meant crossing relatively high ground. Many of these ancient paths, tracks and roads would have developed in the far distant past, and thus have great cultural, military and commercial significance.
As with The Old Deeside Road Revisited, when trying to retrace these old routes, the author recounts both the historical aspect and also his own experiences on the ground. Significantly, his depth of knowledge concerning the hill walking areas of the region is more than apparent, and all of this helps to make an authoritative volume on the subject of the Mounth passes.
