Join Griffin Books for a lively evening of poetry and music in the company of Penarth residents Stephen Payne and Phil Nedin.

Stephen Payne is a poet and Professor Emeritus at the University of Bath. His first full-length collection, Pattern Beyond Chance, was shortlisted for the prestigious Wales Book of the Year Award in 2016. He will be reading from his second collection, The Windmill Proof, which was published in 2021 and a pamphlet The Wax Argument & Other Thought Experiments which was released earlier this year.

Phil Nedin was instrumental in setting up the Penarth Acoustic Club, which ran for six years until the Covid lockdown in 2020. He enjoys singing songs that have interesting lyrical content (mainly older tunes by U.K. and US songwriters) and also plays in local bands banging drums, which is about as far removed from singing folk tunes as it gets but as he says, “it’s all music”

As the BBC's Middle East Editor since 1989, Jeremy Bowen is uniquely placed to explain the region's complex past and troubled present. In this exclusive event, Jeremy will be interviewed about his fascinating new book, 'The Making of the Modern Middle East', by fellow BBC News & Current Affairs Correspondent, Wyre Davies.

***
In this new book, in part based on his acclaimed podcast, Jeremy takes us on a journey across the Middle East and through its history. He meets ordinary men and women on the front line, their leaders, whether brutal or benign, and he explores the power games that have so often wreaked devastation on civilian populations as those leaders, whatever their motives, jostle for political, religious and economic control.

Jane Fraser lives, works and writes fiction in a house facing the sea in the village of Llangennith, on the Gower Peninsula. Join Griffin Books at the newly refurbished Turner Gallery in Penarth, as we celebrate the publication of Jane's second collection of short fiction, 'Connective Tissue'.

***
'Connective Tissue' aims to define the sometimes indefinable and to give voice to those struggling to make sense of what life throws at them. There are those who travel in a continuous loop on London’s underground and those who dance at night with the departed. A woman confronts herself in a bedroom mirror after decades of denial and a widow finds comfort in an osteopath’s consulting room. And then there is a strange creature who falls to earth; dreams and portents; crows and folklore, and much more.

Head down to Penarth Pier for a spook-tacular evening of ghost stories in the company of authors Carly Reagon and Elaine Canning.

Carly's debut novel The Toll House and Elaine's novel The Sandstone City, also her debut, are both published this autumn. They will be interviewed in this special pre-Halloween event by writer, editor and now publisher, Rebecca F. John.

Incredibly propulsive and a genuinely frightening read, The Toll House draws on aspects of the classic ghost story form whilst being a wholly original thriller that reflects themes relevant to contemporary society.

The Sandstone City is a novel that questions what happens when we lose ourselves, when we lose those we love and which fragments of the self are worth holding onto. It is a story about the choices we make, the choices denied us and how we navigate what’s left. Set in Belfast in the early 00s, it is an experimental but accessible work of literary fiction.

When Jan Morris passed away in 2020, she was considered one of Britain's best-loved writers. The author of Venice, Conundrum, and more than fifty other books, her work was known for its observational genius, lyricism, and humour, and had earned her a passionate readership around the world.

Now, for the first time, Paul Clements brings together a full account of Morris' magnificent life, in 'Jan Morris: life from both sides'. Based on a wealth of interviews, archival material, and hitherto unpublished documents, the brand new biography portrays a person of extraordinary talent, curiosity, and joie de vivre.

In this exciting event, Paul Clements, former BBC assistant editor and current literary journalist will discuss this extraordinary biography with Gareth Jones. They will give an insight into Morris’s life and times, looking not just at her travel and history books, but her biographical work, journalism and critical commentary as well as the scale of her writing about Wales.

Why play to 12,000 people when you can play to 12? In Autumn 2021, Robin Ince's stadium tour with Professor Brian Cox was postponed due to the pandemic. Rather than do nothing, he decided instead to go on a tour of over a hundred bookshops in the UK, from Wigtown to Penzance; from Swansea to Margate. One of those stops was Penarth, and Griffin Books are delighted to have Robin back again this year to talk about the book that came out of his 2021 tour, 'Bibliomaniac'.

Packed with witty anecdotes and tall tales, Bibliomaniac takes the reader on a journey across Britain as Robin explores his lifelong love of bookshops and books - and also tries to find out just why he can never have enough of them. It is the story of an addiction and a romance, and also of an occasional points failure just outside Oxenholme.
